Dormer Loft Conversions in London

House with Dormer

Dormer conversions are a preferred choice for semi-detached and terraced homes in built-up areas. Consequently, if you are looking to convert your loft in London, a dormer conversion could be the ideal solution. Below, we explore dormer loft conversions in more detail. This should help you weigh up your options and decide whether a dormer conversion is right for you.

If you have any questions regarding attic conversions, or require expert advice and building work, do not hesitate to contact Econoloft – loft conversions are what we do.

What is a Dormer Loft Conversion?

A dormer conversion involves building a box-shaped structure which sticks out from a pitched roof. This structure has a vertical wall that sits at a 90-degree angle to the floor and can have either a flat or pitched roof. The result is increased head and floor space.

When it comes to dormer loft conversions, there are several styles our clients in London can choose from. These are:

  • Flat Roof Dormers – Have a horizontal roof with a very slight slope for drainage
  • Shed Dormers – Have a roof which slopes in the same direction as the main roof
  • Doghouse Dormers – Have a pitched roof on either side which meet at the top in a point
  • Hipped Roof Dormers – Have a pitched roof on the front as well as both sides
  • L-Shaped Dormers – A dormer made of two parts which connect to form an L-shaped extension

Do Dormer Conversions Need Planning Permission?

Many dormer loft conversions in London fall within permitted development rights. This is because they do not involve dramatic changes to the roof structure. However, as with all projects, dormer conversions must comply with set limits and conditions to be allowed under permitted development. These include things like you cannot exceed the height of the existing roof and any enlargement must be set back at least 20cm from the original eaves.

There are also other factors which can affect permitted development rights. For example, protected areas and buildings have stricter planning rules and are more likely to need planning permission.

The Econoloft team is happy to discuss the requirements of your London attic conversion, advise on planning consents and assist with all other aspects of loft conversion planning. Even where dormer loft conversions do not need consent, we recommend applying for a Lawful Development Certificate.
