A dormer conversion involves building a box-shaped structure which sticks out from a pitched roof. This structure has a vertical wall that sits at a 90-degree angle to the floor and can have either a flat or pitched roof. The result is increased head and floor space.
When it comes to dormer loft conversions, there are several styles our clients in London can choose from. These are:
- Flat Roof Dormers – Have a horizontal roof with a very slight slope for drainage
- Shed Dormers – Have a roof which slopes in the same direction as the main roof
- Doghouse Dormers – Have a pitched roof on either side which meet at the top in a point

Do Dormer Conversions Need Planning Permission?

However, as with all projects, dormer conversions must comply with set limits and conditions to be allowed under permitted development. These include things like you cannot exceed the height of the existing roof and any enlargement must be set back at least 20cm from the original eaves.
