Ways to brighten up a tired kitchen

You’ll often hear people say that the kitchen is the hub of a home. It’s the place where everyone congregates at parties, where your kids sit and do their homework while you prepare the evening meal, and maybe even where you all sit down as a family to eat. As such, you should pay the most attention to the décor.

After all, if you’re going to be spending that much time in there, you’ll want to make sure it’s to your liking. So if your kitchen is looking a bit old and worn, here are some ways to brighten it up, and transform it into the kitchen of your dreams.

Hang pots and pans
Do you often find that when it comes to needing a specific pan, you have to reach right into the back of your kitchen cupboard? Well, thanks to this nifty solution from housebeautiful.com, all of your pots and pans will be within easy reach and you can even use them as a decorative feature – what’s not to love?

Sort out your lighting
If nothing else, you should always ensure that the lighting in your kitchen is good. Invest in spotlights around your cooking and preparation area to aid with optimum visibility. If you have an open kitchen, you should consider down lighting over the dining area – this will cast a soft warm glow that is more relaxing in the evenings. We love this kitchen from channel4.com – the multiple lights really help to brighten up the dark worktops.

Chalk board the wall
You’ll never have to worry about misplacing your shopping list again with a chalkboard kitchen wall. There will be no need for a calendar as you can simply wipe away tasks and add new ones daily. What’s more, it’ll even provide a creative outlet for your children. Easyliving.co.uk has completely nailed it with this kitchen idea.

Custom-write your kitchen splashback

We think this customisable kitchen splashback seen on housetohome.co.uk is the ideal way to personalise any kitchen. It’s easy to fit as it just sticks to the wall, so there’s no need to worry about tiles and grouting. What’s more, you can choose up to 100 words, allowing you to customise it to your exact wishes. How about having one made with a list of your favourite dishes from around the world?

Who lives in a house like this?

Share this post to ....Share on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterShare on LinkedInPin on Pinterest

When it comes to choosing a theme for the interior of your home, you may find yourself stumped. Many people are scared to use bright colours for fear of offending others, and in turn, copy everyone else and keep things neutral. The danger of this however, is that, while attractive from a buyer’s perspective, it can make your home look a little bland and samey – just like everyone else’s. In your home, you make the rules, so if you want to glam up your house, feel free to.

Today we’re taking a look at some celebrity homes – you’ll find plenty of design ideas to recreate in your own property.

Oprah Winfrey
Upon first glance, this kitchen looks rather modest and plain to belong to a big personality like Oprah Winfrey. However, if you look again, there are a few tell-tale signs, such as the solid marble worktop, the chandelier and the ornate stone feature above the oven. According to frontdoor.com, this property is one of several that the star owns, and reportedly also contains a solarium and wine room – jealous, us?

Robin Williams
Villa Sorriso stands between Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Hookedonhouses.net reports that Robin Williams’ home is not just your average property – in addition to the standard rooms, there’s also a library, art and wine cellars, a theatre, an elevator and even a viewing tower that overlooks the valley – pretty impressive huh? We just love this muted yellow shade in the entrance hall; it’s really welcoming and gives it a tranquil, calm feel. The planet lighting is pretty cool too. Using a simple and pale colour palette really opens up a room – soft lighting gives it a warm glow and contrasts wonderfully with the stone steps.

Kanye West
From the outside (top left pic), Kanye West’s home looks, well, dull. Inside however is a different story completely. Look how lavish his bedroom is – surely all of those cushions are Kim’s influence? Check out the size of that television screen – it’s like having your own personal cinema! A comfortable squashy sofa, warm rug and low coffee table add the perfect finishing touches. Nydailynews.com also tells us that he has a built in computer in every room – there’d be no squabbling over whose turn it is in that house.

While each celeb has chosen a completely different approach to their home décor, one thing they all have in common is space, and huge amounts of it. If you’re lacking space in your home, you may wish to consider having a loft conversion.

Here at Econoloft, our 40 years’ experience in the industry makes us more than qualified to extend your home. If you’re in need of further design inspiration, you’ll find plenty in our gallery.

Seven of the best loft conversions ideas

Share this post to ....Share on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterShare on LinkedInPin on Pinterest

Do you have a loft that you barely use? Maybe it’s really draughty up there, you’re afraid of spiders, or it’s currently acting as a dumping ground for everything you still need to sort out?

Well, did you know that making a three bedroom home into a four bedroom home can add anything up to 15 or 20% per cent to the value of your home, depending on where you live?

Whatever the reason, there are plenty of options when it comes to making the most from your loft.

Here at Econoloft, we love to help you make your house in to an even greater home, so we’ve come up with seven of our favourite ideas for loft conversions…

1. Nice and Nautical

By far the most popular in loft conversions, adding an extra bedroom can give your teenager some much needed space as they grow up, as well as add extra value to your house.

Nautical is a very on-trend theme at the moment. Bold reds and blues really help to brighten up an otherwise neutral room. Painting the walls white makes your loft look much more spacious, whilst matching rugs add extra warmth for chilly days. Find out how you can re-create this seaside theme with some helpful tips from Channel4.com.

2. Entertain yourself

An entire room devoted to games will not only keep your kids entertained on a rainy day, it’ll also ensure the rest of your house stays tidy. Bonus!

It’s not just younger kids who’ll love a games room either – let the man of the house be a big kid too with the addition of a pool table.

3. Get Wetter than Wet

Turn your loft in to a wet room! Create a chic and ultra-modern feel with a wet room, ideal for those who have a small loft.

This wet room from housetohome.co.uk shows how combining cool steely grey tones with black grouted tiles can give your wet room an up-to-date, stylish look.

4. Dine in Style

If you’ve always longed for a room in which to entertain guests but you don’t have enough space for a dining room or your current one isn’t very modern, converting your loft in to a dining area could be the ideal solution.

Floor to ceiling windows let in plenty of light to brighten up the room. Eat every meal with a spectacular view, and enjoy dining in an intimate space.

5. Lounge Around

How about a loft-converted living room? Whether you’re just looking for a bit of extra space or a quiet area you can escape to, converting your loft into a living room is a great use of extra space.

A corner sofa makes the most of the space – add large squishy cushions for a comfortable homely feel. Tall racks make great storage space for DVDs and CDs, without taking up too much space.

6. Find your inner calm

If you need somewhere quiet and peaceful to study, the loft is the perfect place to convert into a home study. Work can be stressful at the best of times, so converting your loft into a space which helps you keep calm and de-stress can do wonders for your motivation!

White furniture adds a contemporary feel to a loft space, and is known to be a calming colour. Wall attached shelving units make great storage space, enabling you to keep your office perfectly organised.

7. Clutter be-gone!

Lofts are most commonly used for as storage; usually very messy with anything and everything just plonked up there, just to get it out of the way. So, instead of cluttering up your loft with, why not get everything organised? Trust us, you will feel a lot better for it! Clean home, clear mind!

In-built cupboards with well-placed shelves allow you to store everything neatly away so you’ll easily be able to find your belongings.

With our help, you can convert your old dusty loft into the room of your dreams. All it takes is a little imagination and some creative thinking to add value to your home.

Don’t just take our word for it – have a look at what some of our lovely customers have to say about us on our testimonials page.
