Last minute on-the-day preparations

So you’ve put up the tree, wrapped everyone’s presents and left a carrot stick out for Rudolph. It’s now Christmas Day – but it’s not time to relax yet. There are still some last-minute preparations you can do on the day itself to add some extra festive cheer to your home. Let’s take a look.

Keep the kids entertained
Christmas Day can get a little hectic, especially if you’ve still got plenty to do before your guests arrive. So it’s a good idea to keep your little ones entertained while you set about getting everything ready. These salt shaker decorations seen on countryliving.com will keep the kids occupied while you work, and they’ll double up as table decorations too – best of both worlds! Get your hands on some miniature reindeer figurines and some tiny trees and let your kids get to work.

Easy table centrepiece
Depending on how much time you’ve got, you may need to start the preparation for this centrepiece the day before. Get your hands on some cheap baubles in white, red and silver. Use a combination of glue, glitter, tippex pens and sequins to decorate them. Once dry, arrange them on a three tiered dish around a red church candle – and there you have it, the perfect centrepiece, seen on Pinterest.com.

Edible garlands
You don’t have to spend a fortune on decorations this Christmas – why not make your own instead? All you need for these edible sweetie garlands (from marthastewart.com) is a few packets of sweets and some string. For obvious reasons, it is wise not to make the garlands until Christmas Day itself – unless of course you fancy making some new ones just before the guests arrive…

Heavenly seating
Up the festive volume with these super cute angel wings, designed for chair backs. We saw these on countryliving.com and fell in love. They’ll add a heavenly touch to your Christmas dining room – although maybe invest in oversized Santa hats for the boys.

Festive table runner
We all want some figgy pudding, so bring some out here. We love this festive table runner seen on goodhousekeeping.co.uk. It’s a really easy way to decorate your table in time for Christmas – ideal for those who are rushing to get everything prepared at the last minute. Just adorn the table with some Christmas confetti and a few crackers and you’ll be sorted.

Last week, we brought you lots of lovely ideas for decorating your home in time for Christmas. Today, we’re going to be focusing on how to dress up the outside of your home. Whether you love to adorn the front of your home and garden with lights and huge Christmassy displays, or prefer the understated look, you’ll love the ideas we’ve uncovered today. Let’s take a look.

Festive welcome mat
Get your guests into the Christmas spirit before they’ve even crossed the threshold with a festive welcome mat, seen on styleathome.com. We love this Christmas tree themed design – have you found a better one?

Christmas nostalgia
Do you remember the good ol’ days when it would snow every Christmas? Children would take their sledges and be entertained for hours. This year, recreate some of the magic associated with your childhood Christmas and decorate your front porch with nostalgic winter items, as seen on southernliving.com. For a true festive feel, why not sprinkle over some fake snow?

A wreath with a difference
Hanging a wreath on your front door will instantly make your home look suitably festive. This year, however, how about shaping your wreath into a snowman? We found this fantastic idea on sweetlittlebluebird.com. The best part is, you can dress your snowman as bright or as classic as you like, just by changing his hat and scarf. We’ll definitely be trying this idea out.

Magical lantern display
Check out this lantern display from housetohome.co.uk – it adds a magical touch to a winter wonderland setting. Simply add sparkly snowflakes and snow-sprayed pinecones to complete the look. We love the idea of hanging fairy lights from tree branches to create a glimmering outdoor scene.

All-out Christmassy
Okay, so forget classy and understated for a moment – this is a house that screams festive fun. We found this gem on hgtv.com – from the lights in the trees, to the lollipop on the front door and the Santa stop here sign, it’s clear that this homeowner loves Christmas. Have you seen any homes like this in your area?

We’re continuing with the Christmas theme again today – less than two weeks now! Perhaps the title of this post has given you a clue? Yes today we’ll be focusing on festive decorations and easy ways for you to turn your home into a Santa’s grotto lookalike. Let’s take a look.

Chalk up your baubles

This idea from rd.com is a great way to personalise your decorations. Simply paint a layer of chalkboard paint over your plastic bulbs. Once dry, pick up a stick of chalk and write your festive greetings. You may even decide to write the name of each member of your family and use them as place settings.

Make a card display

An easy way to display your Christmas cards is to hang them. Attach some glittery tinsel to either end of a mirror and use small pegs to hang your cards – not only does this save precious shelving space in your home, it also doubles up as a festive display. We saw this one on marthastewart.com.

Colour creative

Head to johnlewis.com to get your hands on this colour your own Christmas bunting. This will be fun for the kids and will keep them entertained while you wrap Christmas presents. By allowing them to get involved in the festive preparations, your home will feel all the more Christmassy.

Homemade stocking

Christmas stockings make the perfect accompaniment to gifts. Rather than buying one this year however, why not make your own? There’s a template and instructions for this snowman stocking on lovehome.co.uk. And if you’re feeling extra creative, why not come up with your own festive design.
