It’s the start of a new year, and we’re betting that one of your resolutions this year was to join a gym. We’re becoming ever more health conscious these days, and where better to burn off some of those weekend calories than at your local gym? The only problem is, gyms can be quite expensive. After all, there’s the joining fee, general membership costs, new gym gear, bottles of water, and money getting there and back. On top of that of course, there’s the embarrassment of getting sweaty and red faced in front of all of those other fit people. When you take all of that into consideration, you may well start to have second thoughts. But what if we told you that you could set up a gym in your own home? Interested? Read on for the ins and outs of planning a home gym.
Think about the type of gym you want
It’s all well and good telling everyone that you’re going to have a home gym, but have you stopped to consider what type of gym you want? There are all kinds of options available to you. Your best bet is to think about your preferences and what you’d like to achieve. If you hate the idea of weights and would rather focus on toning up your legs, then it’s pointless to invest in fancy arm equipment.
Who else will be using your home gym? If it’s going to be the whole family, ask them what they’d like you to include in the way of equipment, sound system or television. Some people find that music really helps them get into a workout, while others may prefer to catch up on their favourite television shows while exercising – think of it as making the most of your free time.
What about lack of space?
Wanting a home gym is commendable. However, if you don’t have the space, you may need to consider how best to incorporate it into the space you do have. You could always combine your gym and your home office, store equipment in a guest bedroom, or set up a small area in your garage. When trying to figure out the best solution, try to think as practically as possible – if you’re planning to work out in the evening, it might not be such a great idea to put your equipment in the room next door to your little ones – you don’t want to disturb them while they’re sleeping.
If you’re considering putting your gym in your loft, you may wish to also install a fan or open a window while you do your work out – otherwise, you run the risk of getting very hot, very quickly. The great thing about a loft gym is that you can section off one corner of the room and install a shower – ideal for that post work out freshening up. Remember to always check the building regulation guidelines before going ahead with any work.
Lastly, you’ll need to think about what sort of equipment you’re going to need. Here are some ideas:
– Mount a television on the wall – you can tune it into music channels or your favourite soaps – it’ll give you something to focus on other than the pain you’re feeling.
– Thick gym mat for stretching
– Hang a mirror on one of the walls and face it while you’re exercising to check you’re doing it properly.
– For cardio exercises, you’ll need an exercise bike, rowing machine and/or treadmill.
– If you’re planning to work on your muscles, invest in a bench and some weights.
