As you know, this week we’re focusing on kitchens, and more specifically, how you can turn a bland kitchen into something bold and fun.

Earlier this week we gave you some tips for sprucing up an old, tired kitchen. Today, we’re going to look at the other end of the scale – contemporary kitchen designs. Here are our top picks.

Breakfast bar
Check out this modern, girly breakfast bar kitchen from housetohome.co.uk. Having a breakfast bar between the open plan kitchen and dining room gives you a great place to chill with friends or relax in the morning with breakfast. The designer has gone for a clean finish with girly floral accents, seen in the pink plastic stool backs, the tea towel design, fake pink flower and the “I heart” message on the extractor fan above the cooker. We can just imagine this as the shared home of two BFFs.

Bright and cheerful
We love these colourful patchwork style kitchen cupboards. Along with the bright chairs and lemon yellow light shade, this kitchen seen on Pinterest.com is an array of mood boosting colour. You can continue the theme by investing in brightly patterned accessories such as tea towels, plastic cups and pots and pans.

Steely grey
Although the monochrome checked tiled floor effect strikes a chord with Victorian design, the steely grey shade of the kitchen cupboards and the dresser, seen on redonline.co.uk, brings this country style kitchen bang up to date. Despite country classic elements such as the Belfast sink, the hanging utensil storage and industrial style pendant lights add a sleek and contemporary look.

Curved island
Okay so we cheated and chose another design from housetohome.co.uk. However, we think that this curved island kitchen design would look just perfect in a city apartment. The polished white finish is accented by the sparing use of black accessories, while the exposed brick style of the opposite wall serves to further highlight the sleek, contemporary design. We could definitely make ourselves at home here.
